On August 29th, families and nutritionists from the Mid-South gathered for the 1st Annual Back to School meeting for PKU.  The event was held at Methodist LeBonheur hospital in Germantown, TN.  The agenda for the meeting was to discuss back to school challenges for PKU children and to participate in a cooking class to make low protein recipes.  Chef Tim Grair was present to guide the group in making yummy dishes such as: Any Season Fruit Bowl, Golden Vegetable Coins, and Moms PKU Casserole.

BioMarion sponsored the event and brought guest speaker Dusty Driver, who is currently on Kuvan. He discussed his life before and after Kuvan. Darla Henderson, Nutritionist with University of Tennessee Knoxville, Genetic Center, spoke about research that Dr. Denise M. Ney PhD, RD, with the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is currently conducting involving Glycomacropeptide, otherwise known as GMP, which will provide a safe alternative protein source in the PKU diet.

Walking for PKU

The Tennessee PKU Foundation held three walks again this year; in Memphis, Nashville, and Knoxvile.  We had a lot of fun and raised awareness for PKU as well as some funds for research.  Thanks to everyone for their hard work and resources to pull these walks off!  Check out the links below to view the pictures for each event.
